The Score Turns 30 On Stage: Fugees Hits, Erykah Badu and a Family Cameo
Diaspora Calling! made its UK debut with Hill and Jean running the classics.
On August 7, Milton Keynes hosted the first UK edition of Diaspora Calling!, the festival Lauryn Hill curates and Dave Chappelle co-hosts. The centerpiece was a 30th-anniversary run through The Fugees' The Score.
Hill and Wyclef Jean traded off on Ready or Not and Fu-Gee-La, then split into solo territory — Jean pulling out 911, Hill delivering Ex-Factor and To Zion. Erykah Badu turned up for Doo Wop (That Thing), and Hill's sons YG Marley and Zion Marley joined the pair on stage.
Diaspora Calling! started in Brooklyn in 2016 as a showcase for the cultural output of the diaspora, mixing music with art and conversation. The UK expansion gave the anniversary a bigger frame than a straight greatest-hits set: the album got played, but so did the lineage around it.
