Thirty Years of Ridin' Dirty: Bun B Brings the South Back Together

Ridin' Dirty, released in 1996 by Bun B and Pimp C as UGK, is still the record that pushed Texas rap onto the national stage and set the tone for Southern hip hop that followed. To mark thirty years, Bun B staged Been Ridin' Dirty on August 1 at Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land.

The guest list read like a Dirty South roll call: Chamillionaire, Lil' Keke, Killa Kyleon, Big K.R.I.T., Slim Thug, David Banner, 8Ball & MJG and LE$, with more added on the way in.

Bun B said the anniversary crept up on him and that he could not let it pass — the album represents a moment that means as much to generations of listeners as it does to him personally. He described the show as a once-in-a-lifetime experience he wanted to be intentional about, and admitted it is still strange that a record is being celebrated this hard three decades later.

The night also confirmed what Houston already knew: since his 2022 RodeoHouston takeover, Bun B has become one of rap's premier masters of ceremonies, capable of pulling dozens of artists into a single coherent show.
