When the Marley Marl-produced Eric B. For President dropped in the summer of 1986, the story was the voice on it — a young Long Island MC named Rakim Allah with a calm, unhurried delivery that made everyone else sound like they were shouting. Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons noticed, and the pair were pulled into the fold.

Paid in Full followed on Zakia/4th and Broadway. It was not just another rap album; it was a template for the golden era. The sequencing, the minimalist cover, even the Dapper Dan wardrobe all pointed the same direction — this was music that carried itself like it mattered. The response was strong enough that a major-label deal with Uni Records was in place before the second album.
